Brag

Go Hurt Locker. If you scroll down to October 17, i forewarned you about its awesomeness.

Quick note on health care. First of all, I'm am sick of the right just arguing for the hell of it. I love my father but it drives me crazy when republicans complain about change when they a) acknowledge and admit there's something wrong with something , b) complain that the leadership won't do anything about it but c) won't suggest a reasonable solution

I don't know that much about the health care but I do know this; lets assume American health care costs X. 20% is paid out of pocket, 50% by private insurance, 30% my the government (Medicare, Medicaid)

Lets assume that the administrative overhead costs of running Medicare/Medicaid are 20% of our FICA contributions. Now, since private insurance is for-profit, its fair to say that that for every dollar put in, 60% actually goes to health care costs, and the other 40% goes to compensation for admin, sales, executive, marketing, etc. Of course the out of pocket goes 100% to health care costs.

So what if we took all the revenue private insurance is generating and put in in the Medicare/Medicaid pool? Would you rather donate money to a charity that pays 50 cents on the dollar to the recipients or 80% on the dollar if the output of the charity is exactly the same?

First, the total percentage of admin costs as a percentage of the pool would drop dramatically if Medicare/Medicaid just became universal health care. The infrastructure has already been established (the SSA, Medicare, etc.). It would just handle more money. Every American is entitled to benefits after the age of 65 (or in some cases younger). We're already in the system; its just a question of allocation.

As the government is ostensibly not for profit, insurance profits and worker compensation would be eliminated for the pool. Also, the moral hazard insurance companies face of essentially losing money when they pay out a claim would be eliminated. Also, the larger the pool to share risk, the less each plan costs.

So the counterargument is that our FICA deduction would be higher? People forget that most people who have private insurance have thier employers pay half of their contribution. If that "payroll" tax was eliminated companies would just have more money to pay their employees.

Quick- hit thought (Peter King fan?)

Im just going to put it out there: If I'm trying to jerk off watching internet porn, I'll go to YouJizz or Redtube, see whats most appealing for the day, almost like a Korean fish market, go at it, and the go back and look to see how many stars it got. 5 stars, I know I have good flash jerk-off judgement. Anything less than 4.5 stars, I start to question if I'm a pervert.

I promise I'll put something up more substantial later but I have to think other people do this.

Also, on a 1-10 liberal scale, from 1 being Buddha and 10 being Oral Roberts, I'm about a 2 when it comes to moral relativism and freedom to have access to competing ideas. That being said, who cares if James Dobson pays to put Tebow in an abortion ad during the Superbowl. If anything, I encourage it. The more they put firmly backed Christian values on T.V, the less the fundamentalists can make the argument that content-based censorship can or should exist in this country. You can't back Stern and Carlin and porn and then call foul when James Dobson does this shit.

Couple of hand histories

Last 6 busts from tourneys, all as a 4-1 favorite (except last one which was a 8ob game). I've been running like this for a while now. I wouldn't be nearly as jaded if people didn't play their hands so incredibly poorly with no concept of what future equity they should expect (particularly the set against single card flush draw hand). My comments with each hand below:

Update: Next tourney (LOL)

K 10 off in middle position w/ middle chip stack and short stacks in front of you is a recipe for getting exactly what he deserved but didn't get. After that flop he was 6% since his Ks was dead.

We have the same stack. When I 3 bet he has to think that his middle pair weak kicker is no good and that he is a 70 % loser at best. He was actually a 76% loser.

This pisses me off to all hell. On paper the guy has odds. But contextually, facing a bet, an all-in raise, an all-in call, you can deduce at least somebody has either a flush or set and the other has a straight or straight draw w/ heart draw. The point is there are probably two dead hearts in the other hands all-in. With three on the board and your one, there's 7 ideally left, putting you at 28%, notwithstanding redraws if the board pairs, which actually brings him down to 23%. Why risk your whole tournament as a less than 4-1 dog with plenty of time and chips left? Did you really think your A or Q were legit redraws against that board?

10 Metal Songs

Listening to a lot of Tool radio on Pandora (go-to channel, great 90s rock) and loving Aenima randomly. Top 10 Heavy Metal songs? (not including Zeppelin (hard rock) or Alice n Chains (alternative))

10) Mother
Most covered and singable heavy metal song. Plus Danzig is funny.

9) The American Nightmare
May be unknown for non Stern listeners (White Zombie). Wakes up 10 million people everyday on Sirius.

8) Aenima
Second best hook on the list. Third on jack up list.

7) Cemetery Gates
Have to mention Pantera. The epic. Play it at the Bank.

6) Freedom
First commercially popular Rage song, still best, and actually makes me curious about the Indian forced evaucation . Killing in the Name Of was awesome but maybe a little overt? "Fuck you/I won't do what you tell me!"? Oliver Stone telling Woody Harrelson in NBK to say in the pharmacy "I'm Controversial!."?

5) Master of Puppets
(Master, Master) . .. . (awesome shit to say) . . . (Master, Master)

4) The Pot
Favorite Tool song. Best track on 10,000 Days, limited radio play, check it out.

3) Reign in Blood
I know this is very Guitar Hero oriented listed but how could you not just blow up when you Reign (or Rain) in Blood? Best metal hook ever, 2nd best work out song. Duh Duh Duh.

2) War Pigs
Al Gore followed Black Sabbath for two years. This song was written in 1970. 19ucking

1) One
Best benching song/Greatest Solo ever. Hit 295 with it.

BTW if your bored, just take this link and run with it : http://deadspin.com/5388978/and-now-theres-this-sean-salisbury-really-is-suing-us

Haven't mentioned Sean Salisbury (the jock from Jock v. Professor (John Clayton) on NFL Live and Sportscenter), or DeadSpin.com for that matter, but its worth looking into. Best way to get fired ever.

Couldn't be better time to update

Couldn't be a better time to update. Just left Phillies game. That game. 100 feet from the double. Saw best and iconic Philadelphia sports moment live. Like my dad said, "you buy tickets and roll the dice". Holy shit.

There's really no way to set this up, although this is the first extra-base walk off hit on final out with team losing in playoffs, aka most exciting possible play in baseball, since Kirk Gibson's elbow pumps in 1988. Rollins got the first and last hit. Had never been to a post season game of any sort (largely because they largely haven't existed in Philadelphia for the last 10 years). Tons on tension and good vibes leading up to the game (This was also Bruce Springsteen's final Philly show and the official close of the Spectrum; talk about a time to be at the Bank). Howard's jack in the first got everyone going, and it was anticlimatic since. The game was sloppy, Blanton was fairly shook and just hanging on by a thread, and after Ibanez got what should have been a two run single taken from fucking Ramirez if anybody, the boredom and frustration got worse and worse. (Sidenote: I think Ramirez batted 7 times. Everytime I looked he was up. He got two ABs in one when Eithier got picked off on a 1-2 Ramirez count).

Howard strikes out in the bottom of the eighth and then Werth, for the probably 13th time that game, got under a 100 mile an hour fastball from Broxton.

Top of the 9th, Eyre gets a single from Furcal and an out. This is actually very significant. This is also when the crowd kind of woke up from a slumber. Some kids behind us just started screaming uncontrollably and everyone was back in it. So Lidge gets up and gets two huge outs. Rememember, this is a one run game with Furcal on 1st with no outs. Furcal is a certified Philly Killer so this got some momentum going.

Ibanez leads off the ninth and hits into two pitch grounder. Then Charlie makes a huge move and PH's Feliz with Stairs, It was pretty hilarious watching them face each other; they are like clones. Stairs wins the stare-off and gets a 4 pitch walk. Then Ruiz gets hit by a pitch. Two on for Dobbs with one out. At this point I was telling my dad that the only way to score both runs in that park appeared to be by putting it about 100 ft below us or a double RF gap. From left field it was playable from that perspective. I also mentioned that, given necessity, Rollins can at least make good contact if forced too. Well, I tried to conjure up memories of Dobbs hitting a double in this spot, and I think I remember once. Dobbs gets owned by Broxton. However, this did lead to one positive observation about Broxton, who I never law really before (I don't think he was there last year). He throws either a fastball or a fastball. If you can make contact, you can drill it. So Rollins comes up. Takes a pitch, takes a ball. He cracked that fucking ball and it flew about 10 ft past Either's range. In the replay, it looked like Eithier hustled, but I don't remember him hustling. They both knew they were fucked, Eithier and the CF.

Nobody left the park for 27 outs, unlike previous trips to the park. Total fucking chaos. The adrenaline from 45,000 people who went from cynical to berserk was unreal and I'll probably never experience again. I threw my hat and punched the guy below me repeatedly. People were screaming for the next 20 minutes.

Some guy started fucking a taxi on the way out, and the driver honked and then smiled. That about sums it up.

Not much else to say. I sincerely doubt I'll ever witness anything like that. My crew was a displaced Cialis commercial of high school buddies in their fifties. All said it was best sports moment ever, and those three combined are no spring chickens.

Hamels will start tommorrow and that should be it. Losing tonight the way they did is much worse than losing 11-0. They got neutered by a cocky black guy with a shaky season for his contract and reputation and worse postseason.

So Yankees-Phillies huh? Wow. This area will be a war zone for 10 days or so. I want the Yankees. Fuck the Angels. There will be 200,000 people around the Bank for the home games. Guaranteed. Riots. Guaranteed.

As for the Eagles, Peter King (who I read religiously and is far and away the best sportswriter alive) made an awesome point about the Eagles loss to Oakland which summed up what a lot of people were thinking but scared to say around other Eagles fans: Who wanted to see what Kolb would have done after the 10th third and out or 25th grounder in the dirt? That timeout call with no timeouts is classic McNabb; he was a fragile psyche. Let a white boy with 750 total yards in two games get a shot in the fourth. Isn't antagaonizing McNabb exactly what got them in the Playoffs (barely) last year? Shit, put Vick in. Anything but scared McNabb.

Since this is a blog about sports betting lines, I should mention the lines. Haven't looked at the Philly line yet, but who could predict at at WAS on MNF? Who are the Eagles? -6 or -1? Not a game I'm betting that's for sure. If I had to pick, I'd say -4.5., with the Phillies being a -135 favorite with Hamels v the young kid they lit up eventually. (Eagles are actually -7 and the Phillies won't post until LVSC wake up Pacific). BTW Yankess already opened at -135 tom.

BTW one word and then three little ones: Redskins LOL
NFL Lines I like next week:

MIN ML +195 vs. Pit at Pit. Why should the 6-0 Vik be a more than -3 dog to 3-3 Pit? That is basically saying the Vikings are underdogs if they both played in Florida. Nonsense.

ATL ML +195 or so against DAL at home. Cowboyws suck. Ryan is really, really, good. I know. He's my starting QB for fantasy. His lines every week are impressive regardless who or where they are playing. Seriously, he's special.

IND at STL giving -13.5. Why wouldn't Manning throw 5 TDs? So it the line assumes the Rams will put up more than 20 pts? Don't get it.

Fantasy player I love:
Ray Rice. Got him for Todd Heap straight up two weeks ago. 50 pts since then and last minute sctratch addition pulling Marques Colston. I wonder how Todd Heap is doing (Heath Miller and Greg Olson are enough TEs for me; I think Miller is actually #1 in fantasy pts). One thing I don't understand about fantasy is that my team in my league is much better than my smaller (money wise) league, but is 3-3, and I'm 6-0 and lead in pts in the small league. Actually thats why I love fantasy. Its not just blind gambling. It requires lots of management and attention, at least a good league it does.

BTW for anybody in my league reading this, I did briefly play with the idea of extending the big play bonus to all 40+ plays, not just 40+ td plays. If I got a lot of people in favor of it, I could adjust it, and see if the W-L totals will change, and then backchange it if it affects anybody.

Personal life: Not much to say. Literally nothing has changed since my last post except my residence. I was in a relationship when everyone was single. Now everyone is wifeyed up and I'm single. Its not intentional. I thought Vinny's crew was a homerun this summer but there's something about 21 year old girls I used to find a lot more attractive. No challenge, they just drink all the time and slut out. I may have to start cruising the net, which I always never thought I would have to resort to. How can you tell if there is any chemistry? There's something about meeting somebody and instant attraction which isn't part of the equation, although I am ignorant.

Movies:
The Hurt Locker
The Hurt Locker
The Hurt Locker

Seriusly. And I have seen some good movies since I saw the Hurt Locker, but I can't say more. Its been about 4 weeks and I still am as enthusiatic as after i saw it. Just fucking rent it or dl it from thepiratebay, I doubt Comcast will be watching illegal dl's of that one. Basically the set up is the story of a IDE crew (explosive device) in Iraq. All action but incredibly smart. I'm talking Generation Kill good, top 3 war movies ever good. Check it out on metacritic.com or something, it has a 96 rating as of today. When the NYT and the WSJ agree on an Iraq war movie, that says something.

Anvil: The Story of Anvil was quite good too. This is Spinal Tap but for real. The most movieish documentary I can remember. So was Waltz with Bashir. Super good, and I love movies with that cartoon technology from Waking Life and aforementioned. How it didn't win best Oscar i'll never know. Whats the deal with that? What is it called? (rotoscoping says wikipedia). But still. See above.

BTW, final note as I probably won't post for a while unless the EAG-GIA in two weeks is crazy:
one underreported sports story is Ivey making and playing the final table at the WSOP in a couple of weeks. If you think poker is all luck and bad beats your fucking wrong. Watch old Ivey tapes in WPT events. He can see your cards. I'm not kidding.

Also, if your bored, check out the Klitichko fight against the Mexican heavyweight. Its pathetic what Klitichiko does to him. And actually, in the same vein, Malcolm Gladwell published an excellent piece about brain trauma in boxing and football right after the Clifton Smith defenseless jack up from CAR/TB. Check it out: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/10/19/091019fa_fact_gladwell

Rollercoaster

For anyone considering getting into commission sales, listen to these two weeks:

Sell $15300 in MD (+1530), cancel due to bad handwriting, -1530
Sell $3740 in MD (+600)
Sell $7500 in MD (+750), undermeasure, goes to -550
Sell $12,300 in DE (+1100)
Sell $8700 in PA (+700)
Sell $20,000 in PA (+2750), cancel inexplicably, goes to -2750
sell $6600 in MD (+1000)
sell $5300 in DE (+530) , cancel inexplicably, -530

So what could be $8000 cash, or at 3 hours a demo, $333 an hour, drops to $3500

So sick

Mid summer blog

So much has happened since the last update. John and Kate broke up (who the fuck are they?), David Carridine died jerking off. and my brother went through transgender reassignment surgery (One of those is not true).

As a follow up with the Alyse, it seems she has a good foundation in Baltimore to start a new life. The funny thing about a "divorce" is that you can only really analyze the nature of a relationship meaningfully once your out of it. Some of the details I've gathered about what happened down the line are pretty fucked up, but a relationship can turn into a battle of attrition, and when it starts to go that way all bets are of. Probably the most fucked up thing is that the last time I saw her she looked incredible ( hopefully she's so depressed shes not eating). I would have prefferred a psych ward or like a 40 pound add on, or at least a drug habit or something.

The Dave house never worked out. I got sick during his "crunch" time and he was antsy. I suppose this is a character trait I should have predicited. Over/under on Dave moving to Wilmington: December 31, 2009. I'll take the under.

I'm living with Vinny right now and its working out pretty well. Our apartment is half a block from Rooney's and we are paying considerably less than our old place. Vinny is pretty deep with his new gf so its really like having 2 roomates instead of one, and I think if it was anybody else there would be a lot of tension. I wish them the best of luck, but at the same time I see things in thier relationship that reminded me of how our relationship dissolved and its tempting to intervene and explain where things will end up if x behavior continues. Def not my place though.

New job is actually working out pretty well. Its probably the first time where Ive actually felt comfortable with my coworkers and expectations in a long time. One thing I have come to realize about sales, and particularly the kind i'm doing, is that it isnt just a "you have a good personality and you'll be fine" type of job. As any job, it requires a lot of learning and training to be good at. Obviously, I'm the type of person who doesn't listen to anybody about anything, and I feel like if I had listened to someone who really knows this business a while back I would have made a lot more money this year. Only in the last few weeks have been utilizing the input of my mentor and my performance has gone way up. Dave made a good point the other day: "I'd rather hire someone smart and motivated who doesn't know anything than someone set in thier ways who is good for average output." I understand why but the prequisite is that the person will actually listen lol.

For anybody who plays online poker, which I have gotten back into pretty considerably in the last two months, I have two suggestions. One is Pokerstars. They have by far the widest game selection and more importantly the most fish. It is quire easy to deposit (bank # and routing #), and withdrawal is just as easy (check once a week, no fee). Second suggestion is to check out SharkScope.com. Thanks Ari for the referral. You can type in anybodies handle, any poker room, and find thier ROI, total profit/loss, stakes played, and a number of other straightforward variables that will clearly indicate who is a donk and who isnt. One thing I found interesting from thier site is that 2/3 of SNG players are not profitable. That indicates to me that there is a lot less luck involved in these SNGs than you might think; the more luck involved the closer that number would be to 50% given the huge sample size.

In 9 weeks of 5 days a week gym I have lost about 15 pounds and brought my bench from 185 to about 250. My suggestions for results: concentrate on one muscle group a day, high weight, low rep, 4 reps for 3 sets. Finish up with cardio, and load up on proteins when you get home. Also, whatever you do, do not start up at the gym with high weight; spend a week doing low weight, high rep stuff so your body will start to remember the motions you will use later. I've done it a million times where you go in superfocused on getting into a routine, go hard for two days, and then pull something or get super sore and give up.

Sports thoughts:
1) I really think someone should step in with an interesting, less passive sport than baseball to take up nights (and gambling) during this dead period before the NFL season. Maybe MMA can step up, maybe televise the WSOP live. The only thing going is the golf majors, and that certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea.
2) Speaking of golf, start the final round of the U.S Open at 3 on Monday, not 9. It was apparently exciting but no one is going to watch that. Didn't Tiger last year start later?
3) Good for Kobe I guess but Orlando prob shouldn't have been there. They shot 58% I think from three range against Cleveland. Ray Allen, the most accurate 3 point shooter of all time, has a lifetime average of 40. That's like Chris Moneymaker winning the WSOP a couple of years ago. It was a lucky fluke, and the series would have been much more interesting with Boston or Cle.
4) Incredible what missing Ibanez has done to the fighting Phils. Beat the Yankees, Red Sox, and Mets back to back to back, lose Ibanez, and then lose 6 straight to Toronto and the Orioles (cough)
5) You can't tell me Boldin for that second round RB from Pitt would not have been a good trade for the Eagles. They have the salary cap room.

Other notes:
1) The Hangover is the only good movie I have seen since the Oscar rush. Total classic
2) Speaking of total classic, Artie on Joe Buck was easily one of the awesomest things i've ever seen. Very rarely does the smarmy company man lose to the crazy, human, completely uninhibited guy on live TV on the smarmy guys' homecourt.
3) Two bands and singles you gotta check out: "The Dirty Projectors - Remade Horizon" and "Phoenix-1909". I think everybody will know about the latter pretty quickly.
4) I am a huge Bill Simmons podcast advocate, and I've finally come around on the Adam Carolla podcast. the ACP is selectively totally hilarious with the right guest (Duse with the credit). Check it out: www.adamcarolla.com
5) For the first time since about 2005, I have some money, time, no real responsibilities, and a flexible job. If anybody has a good idea to do something crazy and outside of their comfort zone, let me know, I'm all for it.
6) Congrats to the Hills doing the law school application process the exact right way. If anybody is seriously thinking about law school, talk to them about they got in the position they are in with the schools they are going to and the money they aren't paying. Patience paid off big time there.
7) Is there anything on TV right now worth watching? I'm all ears.
